De geschiedenis van het pausdom - de oudste monarchie ter wereld - wemelt van intrige, moord, verraad en mysterie. De Britse historicus John Julius Norwich vertelt het verhaal van de pausen van Petrus tot nu met verbluffende helderheid. Hij deinst niet terug voor smakelijke details maar houdt de grote lijn scherp in het oog. Sommige pausen waren helden en heiligen, andere juist genotzuchtige levensgenieters, gewetenloze schurken of meedogenloze opportunisten. Het knappe is dat Norwich nooit schoonwast of demoniseert: van elke paus weegt hij licht- en schaduwzijde eerlijk en open tegen elkaar af. Een geldwolf kan best een prima bestuurder zijn, en een heilige een nul in diplomatie.
Veel aandacht heeft Norwich ook voor de verdiensten van de pausen op het gebied van kunst en cultuur in Rome. Tal van prikkelende vragen passeren de revue. Waarom was er ooit een hele vleugel van het Vaticaan ingericht voor een moslimprins, die bij de bevolking van Rome veel populairder was dan de paus zelf? Ligt Petrus wel echt onder de St. Pieter begraven? Was er echt een weergaloos aantrekkelijke Romeinse schoonheid, die achtereenvolgens zowel haar minnaar als haar zoon op de Heilige Stoel wist te installeren? Was er ooit een bordeel gevestigd in het paleis van Lateranen? Was Pius XII werkelijk een antisemiet en racist? En hoe stond de Romeinse bevolking tegenover de pauselijke heerschappij?

Maar rond 1500 schiepen rederijkers een moderne literatuur die genotvolle seks ronduit verheerlijkte. Het is bijna schokkend om te lezen hoe deze vrijwel onbekende teksten gedetailleerde vuilbekkerij in artistieke vormen weten te gieten. De seksuele vrijwording leerde ook dat aanranden en verkrachten tot de hogere minnekunst behoorden. Was dat niet wat vrouwen eigenlijk wilden? Daarop volgde een repressie in de zestiende eeuw. De katholieke kerk verbood uitbeeldingen van Maria's blote borst, de Hervorming dwong genot weer in het gelid van de voortplanting en verkrachting werd serieus vervolgd. Verlopen alle seksuele revoluties dan op dezelfde manier?

The role played by ideology in the evolution of civilizations is being energetically debated by archaeologists, but until now the theoretical debates have had little impact on the actual interpretation of field data from Mesoamerica or South America. Studies on pre-Columbian ideology have generally used historical, ethnohistorical, and iconographic data to look synchronically at specific ancient religions. Little progress has been made in applying archaeological information to address the broader problem of the role of ideology in prehistoric culture change... The authors of these papers take a variety of theoretical approaches, seeking to understand how ideology interacts with the ecological, economic, and political factors involved in culture change.
