Lichaamsbeweging houdt niet alleen ons lijf maar ook ons brein in conditie. Dat blijkt steeds duidelijker uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Beweging baat het brein, en daarmee de gezondheid, van de wieg tot het graf. Als kinderen sporten worden ze slimmer, en wie meer beweegt verkleint de risico's op het ontwikkelen van dementie.
Toch worden we wereldwijd steeds minder actief, steeds luier. Dit boek is een bevlogen pleidooi om weer 'gewoon' te gaan bewegen, om een half uurtje per dag uit die luie stoel te komen. Het beoefenen van topsport is echt niet nodig.
Laat je hersenen niet zitten beschrijft de beloning die je krijgt als je beweegt, maar ook de nadelige gevolgen voor je lichamelijke en geestelijke gezondheid als je ervoor blijft weglopen. We wisten al dat overgewicht en obesitas tot de grootste bedreigingen van de gezondheid behoren vanwege de risico's op hart- en vaatziekten, suikerziekte en hoge bloeddruk. Maar de invloed op de hersenen is minder bekend: als kinderen bewegen stimuleert dat de delen van de hersenen die zorgen voor een optimale verstandelijke ontwikkeling en die bij het ouder worden het eerst achteruitgaan. Met recht kan worden geconcludeerd: bewegen is niet alleen van belang voor de slanke lijn, maar zeker ook voor de conditie van het brein.

De fascinatie voor het heelal is door de eeuwen heen altijd erg groot geweest. Vroeger bogen vooral theologen en filosofen zich over de vragen hoe het heelal ontstaan is en of We met het doorgronden van het heelal iets kunnen zeggen over de toekomst. Nu is de speurtocht naar een allesomvattende verklaring de essentie geworden van onze theorieën over het heelal. Hedendaagse natuurkundigen denken dat ze de sleutel tot het heelal hebben gevonden en dat die ontdekking zal leiden naar een Theorie Over Alles: een eenduidig, allesomvattend beeld van de natuurwetten waaruit met een ijzeren logica alles te verklaren valt.
Is die gedachte niet al te optimistisch? Kunnen onze theorietjes en de berekeningen van door mensen ontwikkelde computers ons werkelijk alles vertellen over het heelal? John D. Vaak zien wij Nederlanders onszelf als een degelijk en spaarzaam volk en we leggen de schuld van de huidige financiële crisis maar al te graag bij de Amerikanen. Die zouden maar raak besteden en zichzelf onbeperkt in de schulden steken. Jaap van Duijn laat in De schuldenberg echter zien dat de schulden van Nederlandse gezinnen veel groter zijn dan die van Amerikaanse gezinnen en dat Amerikaanse banken veel meer eigen vermogen hebben dan Nederlandse. Van Duijn voorspelt bovendien dat de schuldenberg een terugkeer naar financiële degelijkheid zal forceren, iets wat na eerdere schuldexplosies ook altijd is gebeurd. Het is onvermijdelijk dat banken minder gemakkelijk geld zullen uitlenen aan gezinnen en dat huizenkopers weer moeten leren sparen en eerder hun leningen zullen moeten aflossen. En we moeten ook nog op de blaren zitten: van eerdere crises weten we dat niet iedere overheid, niet iedere bank en niet iedere onderneming haar schulden zal afbetalen. De schuldenberg opent genadeloos onze ogen voor de penibele situatie waarin we ons momenteel bevinden. Het is een glasheldere analyse van onze economische situatie en bovendien een kritische evaluatie van de aangekondigde bezuinigingen van het kabinet-Rutte.

Van alle materie in het universum is 9O% of meer ongezien. Niemand weet wat het is. Het universum breidt zich uit, maar niemand weet hoe lang de expansie al gaande is. Gaat dit eindeloos door of klapt het in elkaar, een soort omgekeerde big bang?

Er is iets vreemds aan de hand. We waren nog nooit zo rijk als nu. Bedrijfswinsten, vermogens, pensioenpotten: naar bijna alle traditionele maatstaven leven we in uitzonderlijk welvarende tijden. Maar wie beter kijkt, ziet dat steeds minder mensen meedelen in al die welvaart. Ouderen moeten langer door tot hun pensioen. Jongeren hebben het voor het eerst minder goed dan hun ouders. En een woning is in veel steden ook voor de betere middenklasse onbetaalbaar. Zelfs wie zuinig leeft heeft een probleem: sparen kost binnenkort geld. Sander Heijne en Hendrik Noten onderzochten waar het misging met onze economie. Hoe kan het dat vrijwel niemand de groei van de economie nog terugziet in zijn of haar portemonnee? Wat bedoelen onze politici eigenlijk, als ze elkaar feliciteren met een 'goed presterende economie'? De zoektocht bracht ze van premier Rutte tot de oprichters van Uber, naar de boeken van Adam Smith. En van conferenties op Zwitserse bergtoppen tot de achterkamertjes van Den Haag. Vliegend door de tijd ontrafelen ze het systeem en rollen ze van de ene verbazing in de andere. Met als conclusie: de huidige hang naar groei is geen noodzaak, maar het resultaat van een verhaal dat we zijn gaan geloven. Er is niets vanzelfsprekends aan stagnerende lonen of veel te hoge huizenprijzen. Het kan anders: eerlijker en duurzamer. Het is tijd voor een nieuw verhaal, waarin de economie weer voor ons werkt, in plaats van wij voor de economie.

Stephen Hawking (1942-20I8) was de beroemdste wetenschapper ter wereld. Een meesterbrein in een volledig verlamd lichaam, die communiceerde via een spraakcomputer. Wetenschapsredacteur Martijn van Calmthout (de Volkskrant) en sterrenkundejournalist Govert Schilling sloegen de handen ineen en schreven een verrassend en vlot geschreven boekje over alle facetten van Hawkings leven en werk. Een zeer toegankelijke kennismaking met een veelzijdig genie.

Nederland kan de komende twintig jaar weinig economische groei meer verwachten, stelt Jaap van Duijn. Na de ongekende welvaartsstijging sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog hebben we nu te kampen met verzadiging, vergrijzing en de concurrentie van nieuwe landen. Op termijn zal de bevolking gaan dalen. Voor onze rijkdom hebben we een hoge prijs betaald: een aanslag op het milieu, een overvol land, een verlies aan rust en ruimte. Aan meer materiële welvaart is nauwelijks behoefte - wel aan meer welzijn. Maar zijn we bereid de inspanningen te verrichten om terug te winnen wat verloren is gegaan? Bestaat er een Nederland na de groei?

Kennis en informatie blijken van groot belang te zijn voor de economie en maatschappelijk welzijn, wetenschap is een cruciale productiefactor. Dit heeft gevolgen voor de universiteiten, die meer betrokken raken in een internationale concurrentieslag en steeds bedrijfsmatiger gaan functioneren. Niet al die gevolgen pakken even gunstig uit voor het wetenschappelijk onderwijs en onderzoek zelf. Publicatie kritiseert vooral voor de sociale en geesteswetenschappen funeste bedrijfsmatige disciplinering van wetenschap en wetenschappers en houdt een pleidooi voor de kritische rol van de wetenschapper.

De crisis rond de Europese Monetaire Unie (emu) lijkt niet te stoppen. Het gaat allang niet meer alleen om het begrotingstekort van de Griekse overheid; de toekomst van de gezamenlijke Europese munt staat volop ter discussie. Politiek, economie en emotie strijden in het debat om voorrang. De economische kant van de kwestie wordt vaak als ingewikkeld en onbegrijpelijk gezien. Dat is onterecht.
In dit boek zet het Centraal Planbureau op basis van de meest recente gegevens op begrijpelijke en toegankelijke wijze de belangrijkste kwesties die met de Europese schuldencrisis samenhangen op een rij. Waar ging het mis? Wat is er sindsdien gebeurd? En hoe moet het nu verder met de euro?

Marx was in staat een verband te leggen tussen de geestelijke erfenis van het humanisme der Verlichting en het Duitse Idealisme enerzijds en anderzijds de realiteit van economische en maatschappelijke feiten. Op die manier wist hij de fundamenten voor een nieuwe wetenschap inzake mens en maatschappij te leggen, die empirisch is, maar tegelijkertijd doordrenkt is van de geest van de westerse humanistische traditie. Ondanks het feit dat deze geest van humanisme wordt veronachtzaamd en verdraaid bij het merendeel van de stelsels die er zich op laten voorstaan te spreken in naam van Marx geloof ik, zoals ik zal trachten in dit boek aan te tonen, dat een renaissance van het Westerse humanisme Marx zijn vooraanstaande plaats in de geschiedenis van het menselijk denken zal teruggeven.

Maar ook al moet dit gezegd worden, het zou naief zijn de betekenis van Freud, omdat hij nimmer de hoogte van een Marx bereikte, uit het oog te verliezen. Hij is de grondlegger van een nieuwe wetenschappelijke psychologie en zijn ontdekking van de onbewuste processen en de dynamische aard van de persoonlijkheidsstructuur is een unieke bijdrage tot de menswetenschappen en heeft het beeld van de mens voor goed veranderd.
